When we do not get a sufficient amount of sleep, our brain secretes excess ghrelin and reduces the amount of leptin it usually provides. These two hormones are key players for regulating appetite. Excess ghrelin, the hunger hormone, causes increased appetite. When the brain reduces the production of leptin, the satiation hormone, we fail to feel satiated.  Additionally, when we are under extra stress, we secrete excess cortisol which also increases appetite and prevents us from relaxing.
